Monster Amigurumi | Free Crochet Pattern

Crochet monster amigurumi

When I started making my own creations, I started with monster amigurumi. Since then I haven’t designed many monsters but they were always in my mind. So, to celebrate my birthday month and reaching 10K on instagram (Wow! Thank you!) I thought it would be nice to share a little monster amigurumi with you 🙂

Meet Ras, a cute little monster (from «téras» which means «monster» in Greek), very excited to be here, easy and quick to make!

I hope you will enjoy making this little monster amigurumi.

Happy crocheting!

*Please keep in mind that I really love what I’m doing and that’s why I’m putting a lot of effort and time to share this pattern for free. So, allow me to mention that this pattern is for personal use only and may not, in parts or in whole, be reproduced, sold, distributed or used for commercial purposes without authorization. Materials

– Small amount of 100% Cotton yarn 125m | 50gr (or any yarn you prefer) in a color of your choice. You will also need a bit of white and black yarn for the eye and a bit of a color of your choice for the bow tie (optional) and the boots (optional). For the mouth, I recommend using a thinner yarn or splitting the yarn you use.

– Crochet hook for the yarn you use. I used a 2,5 mm hook.

– Scissors

– Tapestry needle

– Stitch marker or a thread of yarn (whatever works for you) as we will work in continuous rounds (spiral)

Let’s crochet Monster amigurumi

Head

With a color of your choice.

We will start by making 3 separate pieces:

Piece 1-3:

R1. 6sc in a mr (6)

R2. [inc] x6 (12)

R3. [sc, inc] x6 (18)

R4-7. (4 rnds) 18sc (18)

– for piece 1 and 2: make a sl st in next st, FO and secure the yarn ends.

– for piece 3: don’t FO. Continue to R8.

Now we will join the 3 pieces (on your hook is piece 3):

R8. ch 1, join piece 3 with piece 2 by making a sc in the st where we made the sl st. Make 8 more sc around piece 2. Ch 1, join piece 2 with piece 1 by making a sc in the st where we made the sl st; 17 more sc around piece 1, sc in the ch, 9 sc around piece 2, sc in the ch, 18 sc around piece 3, sc in the ch, 9 sc around piece 2, sc in the ch. At the end of the round you should have 58 sts. Place stitch marker.

R9-33. (25 rnds) 58sc (58)

Stuff the monster. We will add more stuffing after finishing the legs.

Legs

(See also photos below)

Flatten your work and find the center st of the back side.

-There will be 13 unworked sts between the legs on each side of the monster-

Now make as many sc as needed to get to the 6th st after the center st (center st not included). The next st will be the 1st st of Leg 1. Crochet 16sc.

Leg 1

R1. Join the front side with the back side by making a sc in the 1st of the 16 sc you just made. Make 15 more sc. (16)

R2-4. (3 rnds) 16sc (16)

R5. in bl only: [2sc, dec] x4 (12)

R6. [dec] x6 (6)

FO leaving a long tail to close the remaining hole with the tapestry needle (put the needle only through the front loops of the remaining 6 sts). Pull tightly and weave the yarn tail with the needle to the back side of the monster.

Leg 2

Leave a tail about 30cm (12 inches) long at the beginning – we will need it later to sew the hole between the legs closed. Make sure to keep it outside of your work while crocheting.

Make a slipknot on your hook with the same color and attach it with a sc in the 7th st before the center st on the back side of the monster (counting to the right, center st not included).

R1. Join the back side with the front side by making a sc in the 7th st before the center st of the front side (center st not included). Make 14 more sc. (16 sts at the end of the rnd)

R2-4. (3 rnds) 16sc (16)

R5. in bl only: [2sc, dec] x4 (12)

R6. [dec] x6 (6)

– FO leaving a long tail to close the remaining hole with the tapestry needle (put the needle only through the front loops of the remaining 6 sts). Pull tightly and secure the yarn end by bringing it out at the same point as the yarn end of leg 1.

– Stuff firmly the legs and the head / body through the open part between the legs.

– With the yarn tail left at the beginning of leg 2 sew the open part closed. Before you finish with sewing, stuff a bit more if needed. Secure the yarn end.

– Pull tightly both yarn ends of the legs and tie them to a knot. Hide it inside the monster.

R6-8. (3 rnds) 18sc (18)

Make a sl st in next st, FO and secure the yarn end.

Assembly

*Use the images below as a guide.

**Sewing pins could be helpful to keep different parts in place while sewing.

– Choose a position you like most for the eye and place it on the monster; the last st should be on the upper part of the eye. Sew it carefully onto the doll, taking care that it keeps its round shape while sewing. Stuff firmly the eye before you finish with sewing:

– Place the eyelid on top of the eye and sew it carefully in place:

– Embroider a small line with white yarn on the black part of the eye:

– Sew the ears on each side of the head, in a position you like most (see photo below).

– Sew the arms on each side of the monster, in a position you like most:

– With the thinner black yarn (you can also split the yarn) embroider a mouth to the face. Maybe you’d also like to embroider a tooth or a scar (see photos below).

– If there are any visible holes created between the pieces of the head, sew them with a few sts closed.

– Sew the bow tie onto the monster, on one of the 3 pieces or wherever you like to (optional).

– Put on the boots (optional).
